Dartmouth College is the 9th oldest college in the States and was founded by Eleazar Wheelock, a contemporary minister who wanted to educate the youngsters of the northeastern American tribes. The establishment of the college was possible mainly due to the funds that were raised by Native American preacher Samson Occom.
Today, Dartmouth is known as a private, coeducational liberal arts college, located in Hanover, NH, consisting of engineering, medical and business schools, and offering 19 graduate programs in arts and science fields, having an enrollment of nearly 6000 students, being the smallest school in the Ivy League.
The athletic teams from Dartmouth College are known as the Big Greens, who compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I eight-member Ivy League conference, as well as in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), in various sports such as football, basketball and ice-hockey, including tennis, sailing, skiing and lacrosee.
Visit Hood Museum of Art, on Wheelock Street, featuring a fine collection of European paintings, by famous artists such as Francesco Trevisiani or Alfred Sisley, as well as many other beautiful art works.
Have fun with friends or family at the Campion Ice Skating Rink, on Route 10, or at the Storrs Pond Recreation Area, on Reservoir Road, featuring camping, hiking, tennis and swimming opportunities.
Visit the beautiful Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, on College Street, which dates since 1771, one of the many historical churches in the area.
The first inhabitants of the area where Hanover is situated today, arrived sometime between 1765 and 1766, and most of them were from Connecticut. Hanover was chartered on July 4th, 1761, by Governor Benning Wentworth, and it soon turned into an agricultural community.
During the 2000 census, Hanover's population was estimated at a number of nearly 11 000 inhabitants, and according to CNN and Money magazine (2007), Hanover is the second best place to live in America.
